In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
